Mr. Joseph Luri is one of the founders of the Africa Centre. The Centre’s focus is to bring the African communities to work together and benefit from joint activities and or services that are culturally appropriate.
Mr. Luri is a founding member of the Sudanese community in Edmonton and has worked tirelessly over the years to help that community become what it is today. He has worked with families, youth and children from the Sudanese and other African communities.
Mr. Luri is the founder of the homework club known as SKY (Supporting Kids and Youth) running out of Eastwood. The club runs every Saturday with between 50- 75 participants from Elementary, Junior and Senior high schools. He has supported countless families in distress or in need of other resources. Mr. Luri is now working with 300 men and boys on family violence prevention. This program runs conversations, workshops and activities on a weekly basis.
Mr. Luri ran for public school trustee and though not elected, he has created some motivation and momentum for the younger generation. Mr. Luri is a family man. He is married to Esther and they have 3 sons. Mr. Luri is a recipient of many awards including, Crime prevention award with the Province of Alberta, Community /Human rights award from Edmonton Police Service.
